Scam Alert – Avoid Geysir Car Rental!

We rented a compact hybrid Jeep. It broke down after one hour with a “System Default” error.

Stranded in freezing temperatures, we called assistance. They charged €100 just to open a case, then demanded €500 more to send help. If we refused, the €100 was lost.

They promised a tow in 25 minutes, then changed it to one hour—it arrived after two hours. We missed all our plans.

No refund on insurance. No accountability. A total scam. Stay away.

Let me explain my story

Review of Geysir Car Rental – A Complete Scam
1. We rented a compact hybrid Jeep from Geysir in Iceland. The car ran for only one hour.
2. We made a short 10-minute stop at Cairo Crater. When we tried to restart the car, it wouldn’t turn on at all. A message appeared saying “System Default.”
3. We called roadside assistance. They asked us to pay €100 just to open a case.
4. After paying the €100, they told us we had to pay an additional €500 for them to send help. They also made it clear that if we didn’t proceed with the extra payment, the €100 would not be refunded.
5. They initially said the tow truck would arrive in 25 minutes. Once we made the full payment, they changed the estimate to one hour.
6. In reality, the tow truck arrived after two hours. We were stuck in freezing temperatures in the middle of nowhere.
7. Because of this, we missed all our planned expeditions for the day.
8. To make things worse, they did not refund our car insurance at all.

This was one of the worst rental experiences we have ever had. It’s a complete scam. Avoid Geysir at all costs.

The car was clean and the wiper fluid was filled, no problems at all.
It was easy to call them and add another day to the rental period, they did not charge anything more than what I paid for a day during the normal renting period even though I was requesting the change quite late.
But if you are booking via a different platform, they may need your credit information if you haven't given it to them before. So maybe clear this matter before you are at a public location in front of the key box needing to read your credit card info loud out on the phone.

Po telefonie na road assistance stwierdzam, że nie warto sobie zawracać głowy. Niezamykające się drzwi- wysyłają na stację benzynową po spray. Po pytaniu jak dojechać autem w którym drzwi się nie zamykają- gość odpowiedział że to nasz problem 😂 śmiech za taki road assistance

Als je stukken krijgt is het eigen risico erg hoog. Zelfs bij iets simpels als een afgescheurd ad-blue slang (zie foto).

Verder, wanneer je van plan bent om op de IJslandse F wegen te gaan rijden (gravel roads), geloof dan niet dat iedere 4wd auto daarop kan rijden. Wij hadden de ons toebedeelde Hyundai Tucson binnen een week stuk. Dan krijg je een eigen risico van 600.000isk om je oren. Dat is ongeveer 4000 euro.

Dit geintje heeft ons 2 dagen van onze vakantie gekost. Regelen, auto omruilen etc. Ergste is dat we zowel van de automonteur in de Hyundai garage in Akureyre, waar het defect werd onderzocht. Als ook door de asleep chauffeur die het oude brik kwam ophalen en het nieuwe kwam brengen werd verteld dat de Tucson niet geschikt was voor de F wegen die wij hebben gereden en die we nog wilden rijden. De heren waren beide echte IJslanders die menig F weg hadden bedwongen.

De automonteur noemde degene die ons met een Tucson over deze wegen wil sturen onhandig. De chauffeur van de afsleepwagen noemde diegene zelfs iets wat je niet mag posten.

Ook voordat de tweede auto werd afgeleverd had ik voor de zekerheid via een email gevraagd om een andere auto dan een Tucson, maar uiteraard kregen we precies hetzelfde brik afgeleverd als degene die we binnen een week aan gort hadden gereden. Zelfs de kleur was hetzelfde.

Daardoor hebben we onze plannen om de F26 af te zakken, inclusief 2 rivier-oversteken maar niet meer uitgevoerd. We hebben hierdoor ongeveer 150 km moeten omrijden over een stuk midden leuke wegen. Maar goed, we durfden het echt niet meer aan met die Tucson. Dan hadden we die waarschijnlijk ook stuk gemaakt en in dubbele kosten hadden we echt geen zin. Maar goed, het vernaggelt wel weer een deel van je vakantie. Bedankt daarvoor....... 🤬

Bij inleveren van de tweede huurauto wisten de, overigens zeer vriendelijke medewerkers ons dan uiteindelijk toch te melden dat een Tucson eigenlijk niet geschikt is voor F wegen. Achteraf weet men het dus wel. Maar aan achteraf heb ik niets. Die jongens, die hier absoluut geen schuld aan hebben vertelden dat ze iedere 4wd moeten meegeven zonder uitzondering. Omdat F wegen je eigen risico zijn maakt dat dus niets uit (voor de verhuurmaatschappij).

Vooraf hebben wij bij zowel de reisagent als bij het afhalen van de Tucson gevraagd of een dergelijke auto geschikt was. Waarbij we uitgebreid verteld hebben wat we zouden gaan doen. Toen was een Tucson geen enkel probleem.

Men wist ons toen zelfs mede te delen dat een Tucson een "nicer car" was dan de Land Cruiser waar we om vroegen omdat we het eigenlijk al niet vertrouwden. 2 verknoeode vakantiedagen, 4000 euro eigen risico en 3200 euro afsleepkosten verder weten we inmiddels beter.

Moraal van dit verhaal: wanneer je van plan bent in IJSLAND op F wegen te gaan rijden, neem alsjeblieft iets als een Land Cruiser of een Defender om door het landschap heen te komen. Wij zijn door schade en schande wijs geworden.

Toch drie sterren voor het vriendelijke personeel en de uiteindelijk redelijk soepele afhandeling.

I can't recommend this company at all. Because our flight was cancelled, we wanted to postpone the rental period by a day. Instead of returning the vehicle on Sunday evening, we wanted to return it on Monday morning at 4 a.m. The email was not answered, so we paid for the first day completely for nothing. The battery in the vehicle key was empty. The battery in the hybrid was empty. No explanation of the vehicle, only when we returned the vehicle was it explained that we had to rent a charging cable for €10. Where and how the charging works was also not explained. The staff were extremely unfriendly. The highlight when returning the vehicle was that we were charged €150 for parking violations, without proof or a hearing, because the company works with private parking operators. I have travelled all over the world, but I have never experienced anything like this. It borders on rip-off. Book somewhere else.

We had a sterling experience with the Geysir car rental company. 2,5 years ago we booked a car to drive around Iceland, but, unfortunately, due to COVID-19, we were not allowed to enter to country and use it. After that, we got a voucher that was valid until August 2024, but since we have the war in our country now and we can't leave the territory of Ukraine, we decided to get our money back and request a new booking once we have better times. Frankly speaking, I was very pleasantly surprised by how they provided their services and will definitely recommend and choose this company in the future. Thank you so much for your services and keep it up!

We rented a Dacia Duster in Reykjavik for 6 days from Geysir, with a baby seat. However, on arrival they 'upgraded' me to a hybrid Jeep. Although the people there were nice and I have no issue with them there are a few aspects I'm unhappy about.
First of all, the weather was snowy and windy and that caused my windscreen to become dirty. Unfortunately when I went to clean the windscreen there was no fluid in the windscreen spray. Due to the Christmas holidays I couldn't buy any to put in myself and had to keep pulling over to physically clean the screen with snow. With these weather conditions you'd expect there to be some fluid in the car to be able to clean your windscreen.
Second of all, when I went into the car the baby seat hadn't been placed into the car just put in the boot. When I asked for help to put it in the guys said they legally weren't allowed to help me. It was a model I was unfamiliar with and they said they couldn't even tell me how it's supposed to go in. After trying for ages I came to the conclusion that one of the isofix handles on the chair was broken and impossible to put into the car. What an absolute cop-out of the company because they probably just don't want to pay liability insurance. My baby had to be driven with the car seat in a seat-belt only, which we managed to secure after some effort.
Finally, because the car was 'upgraded' to a hybrid I thought it would be fuel efficient, but no, due to the cold weather (I think) the battery was on 1% the entire time which made the upgrade just a downgrade of space and fuel storage. They could have explained the hybrid function and how I was supposed to use it.
